Biography Education

Robert I. Webb, the Paul Tudor Jones II Eminent Research Professor at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, is a distinguished academic with a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Chicago and an M.B.A. in Finance also from the same institution. He completed his B.B.A., majoring in Business Administration, at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Clre.

Research Focus

Professor Webb specializes in speculative market dynamics, focusing on how different market structures impact financial market pricing behaviors. His research particularly delves into how traders make decisions and examines the effect of noninformational factors on market prices. Current research topics include high-frequency trading's influence on prices, latency, and behavioral finance.

Professional Experience

Prof. Webb has substantial experience in trading fixed income securities at the World Bank consultant capacity, trading financial futures and options on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange as a member, designing new contracts for the exchange as a senior financial economist, serving at both the Executive Office of the President's Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission as Senior Financial Economist, and engaging with various industry leaders.

Research Contributions

Notably, Prof. Webb has made significant contributions to finance research through publications that address key issues like liquidity costs' impact on central bank announcements, price discovery in China’s crude oil futures markets, determining equilibrium transaction fees in the Bitcoin network, funding liquidity shocks, connectivity costs affecting market efficiency, hedging effects on pricing dynamics, and more.
